Spherocones

Spherocones

These light grey vessels, made of clay, resemble a combination of a hemisphere and a cone in shape. Some specimens have an elongated, pointed form reminiscent of a fish. All the vessels are similar in size, with rounded sides and pointed bottoms, which makes it impossible to stand them upright on any surface. The outer surface is decorated with fingerprint impressions, stripes, and ornamental patterns. Decoration techniques such as moulding, applique, incision, and stamping were employed. The very narrow mouth opening indicates that these vessels were intended for storing and pouring liquids. They were mainly used to store liquid medicines, aromatic oils, and mercury. All items were made on a potter's wheel and fired at high temperatures, which ensured their strength and durability.
