Kusbegylik – An Inseparable Part of Kazakh Traditions

The art of falconry was included in the Global List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2016.

This art, which demonstrates the nobility of the Kazakh people and the bravery and courage of its men, requires exceptional wisdom, strength, and eagle-eyed vigilance. For true kusbegi (falconers) to establish rapport with nature's wildest, most predatory, and dangerous bird and train it to obey requires a long time, patience, and skill. It is extremely important to bond with a predatory bird, wild by nature, without frightening or startling it. Kusbegi apparently begin with pleasant sounds and a quiet voice, with a warm gaze rather than a piercing stare. For there is no animal that does not fear the human voice and human eyes. Taking this into account, kusbegi must make the bird feel their harmlessness at all costs.

Falconry is an inseparable part of Kazakh traditions and customs. It is a manifestation of all the noble qualities inherent to our nation. As long as the Kazakh nation exists on earth, this art cannot disappear - on the contrary, we witness its rapid development every day. We believe that our descendants will also not part with this tradition. For the majesty and nobility of the bird of prey is a quality ingrained in our people. The golden eagle is a symbol of freedom, independence, and liberty for the Kazakh people. May it never descend from its pedestal.
