Day of Remembrance for Victims of Political Repression and Famine

May 31 is a historic day full of lessons for our people. In 1997, by decree of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, May 31 was declared the Day of Remembrance for Victims of Political Repression and Famine. During the years of Stalinist repression, 103 thousand people were persecuted, of whom more than 25 thousand were executed. Among them were prominent sons of the Kazakh people: Shakarim Kudaiberdiyuly, Akhmet Baitursynov, Mirzhakip Dulatov, Mukhamedzhan Tynyshpayev, Magzhan Zhumabayev, Sanzhar Asfendiyarov, Oraz Zhandosov, Turar Ryskulov, Saken Seifullin, Ilyas Zhansugiyrov, Beimbet Mailin, and many other outstanding figures. With the dawn of Independence, the era of rehabilitation of the innocently convicted began. As is known from history, the Aulie-Ata region was also engulfed by the flames of the Red Terror. Under the false accusation of "enemy of the people," more than 5 thousand residents of the region were punished, and 845 people were innocently executed.

Among them were respected people such as Kabylbek Sarymoldayev, Sydyk Ablanov, and Ashir Burkitbayev. On this memorial date, the staff of the State Historical and Cultural Reserve Museum "Monuments of Ancient Taraz" under the Ministry of Culture and Sports of the Republic of Kazakhstan laid flowers at the monument to the victims of political repression and famine, located on the street of the renowned marksman Ibrahim Suleimenov in the city of Taraz, honoring the memory of the victims with a moment of silence and paying tribute to their spirits.
