Monitoring Work Was Conducted at Abdikadir Mosque
Employees of the “Scientific Research and Monument Protection” department of the State Historical and Cultural Museum-Reserve “Monuments of Ancient Taraz” under the Culture Committee of the Ministry of Culture and Sports of the Republic of Kazakhstan conducted regular monitoring work at the Abdikedir mosque, located at the intersection of Abay and Kosheney streets in Taraz.
The Abdikedir mosque, classified as a historical and cultural monument, was built in the early 20th century and is considered one of the large mosques of Taraz. It had a large courtyard and a major madrasa on the land of Aulieata. In the early 1920s, the complex was completely destroyed, and to date only its entrance section has been preserved. Until the 1920s, the duties of chief imam were performed by Altynkhan Tore — a scholar widely known in the Muslim world, who studied the foundations of Islamic civilization and spiritual knowledge, wrote many works, and whose name is remembered to this day.

The first restoration work was carried out in 1975–1980. In 1990, the entrance door of the mosque was restored, with both sides of the door frame decorated with carved ornaments. In 1992, a new madrasa building was constructed on the complex grounds. In 2002, a complete restoration of the mosque entrance facade was carried out. The entrance is valued as an artistic heritage — it is the original construction part in the form of a “darbaza” portal. The ornamental door and domed monument are built from fired brick, with the main facade facing Kosheney Street. Only the spans remain from the dome. The voluminous composition of the entrance is executed in traditional form using elements of medieval regional architecture. The western foundation of the courtyard has a cavity in the central pillar, located at the entrance to the gate pediment. The courtyard side is also decorated with two-row niches. One lower cavity serves as a step to access the roof. The interior space by the door is expanded with symmetrically placed large niches and has an arched door, outside of which stands a domed tower with a low arched lantern.
During the monitoring, mosque guard Bakyt Abdymomynov familiarized the team with the current condition of the mosque building preserved from the past century and shared information about the number of visitors coming for prayer. During the monitoring, staff discovered fragments of a ceramic jug on the tower with the arched lantern in the upper part of the mosque. We inform you that restoration work on the jug will be conducted in the future, and we will share its complete image with you.
