Archaeological Excavations Were Conducted

In July of the current year, employees of the State Historical and Cultural Museum-Reserve “Monuments of Ancient Taraz” participated in archaeological excavations conducted near the village of Asa, Zhambyl district, Zhambyl region, under the leadership of leading research fellow of the A.Kh. Margulan Institute of Archaeology, archaeologist, PhD Doctor Akimbek Yeraly Shardarebekuly. Leading specialists noted that the excavation area is a site called Tortul. Tortul refers to settlement names — fortified sites of the ancient and early medieval periods (8th–14th centuries) built from earthen mounds, representing four-sided elevations with flat tops and steep slopes. During the excavations, construction materials of the monuments were identified and descriptions of found objects were given. During the excavation work, cultural layers formed over centuries at the ancient settlement were discovered: ceramic lids, fragments of ceramic ware, and horse bones.
